About Sean McNulty

Sean McNulty, MD of Innovator:

I have over 29 years experience in innovation management and implementation. My key role is in mentoring, training and implementing innovation management processes for micro and small businesses.

I worked in the Kilkenny Design Workshop for 5 years. In 1991 I established Dolmen (www.dolmen.ie), a leading edge New Product Development consultancy and in 2000, with a wealth of experience and a highly skilled team, I set up the innovation management and NPD training consultancy Innovator (www.innovator.ie).

Through Innovator, I provide knowledge, skills and tools to enable entrepreneurs, SMEs and LEs to research, design, develop and commercialise their business ideas/activities. My company Dolmen has won various National and International Design Awards for developing innovative products.

Credentials:

I graduated from NCAD with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design. I am an approved New Product Development Professional; awarded in 2004 by the Product Development Management Association (PDMA) USA (this is the only internationally recognised NPD qualification). I am a member and past President of the Institute of Designers in Ireland (IDI). I am a FAS approved trainer provider in New Product, Service and Process Development.

Current Activities:

I am running the Innovation Connection s programme on behalf of IntertradeIreland, with Invest Northern Ireland and Enterprise Ireland on steering committee. The aim of this programme is to uncover the unmet needs in the security market, identify opportunities for innovation and give SMEs access to this untapped market. In the new year, we will be targeting 60 SMEs in the bi-jurisdictional area of Ireland to engage innovation activities.

I am currently part of the National Standards Authority of Ireland’s steering committee for Innovation Management. I am part of a team developing a European CEN Innovation Standard

I am on the IDI Awards committee and currently working on the organisation of the annual all island ‘Best of Design in Ireland’ awards to be held in Belfast 2010.

Previous Activities:

Ran Innovator hands-on ‘Driving Innovation’ workshop with Chambers, CEBs and IT’s, enabling 153 SMEs to trial key business model innovation tools.

Lead presenter on Skillnets ‘Innovation in Products and Services’ workshop in 2008-2009

Lead Presenter on Enterprise Ireland’s ‘Introduction to Innovation and R&D Management’ course – three days of practical workshops and one day of in-company mentoring with 243 companies

Ran a cluster based activity with micro business in Belfast, Donegal, Leitrim, Omagh, Cavan. This had linked inputs from relevant local Enterprise Boards and was coordinated through the Peace and Reconciliation program.

Past President of the Institute of Design In Ireland – an all island body for the design profession.

Mentor and facilitator on behalf of 16 City/county Enterprise Boards
